Gonder, the cross roads of Ethiopian civilization, is located 50km north of lake Tana, 740 km north of Addis Ababa and situated in the foothills of the simian mountain at an altitude of 2,200meters above sea level .Gonder served as the capital of Ethiopia for more than 200 hundreds years from the rise of Fasiladas (1636-67) to the fall of Tewodros (1855-68) instruction in painting, music dance, poetry and many other disciplines thrived. Because of the focus on arts and architecture it has been labeled the Camelot of Africa. Gonder is famous for its massive ruins of imposing castles which depict the old days of our emperors and the skill and the craftsmanship used in the building of these several castles.
Things To See in Gondar
Debre Birhan Selassie Church. At the end of the 17th century, a church was built at this location and destroyed. The church that can be seen now dates from the 1880s and is the only one to survive the Sudanese attacks. Twelve towers guard this building, each representing one of the 12 apostles. Do not miss its intricated ceilings of painted angels.
Fasil Ghebbi or the Royal Enclosure is an incredible museum complex showcasing the last centuries of Ethiopia’s emperors. It contains Fasilides Castle, Empress Mentewab’s castle, Iyasu Palace, Dawit III Hall, a library, a banqueting hall, and 3 churches among several other buildings. Some of them were destroyed by the Sudanese Dervish, the Italians and also British bombs during Ethiopia’s liberation in World War II.
Fasilides Castle It was built in 1640 as the home of King Fasilides. Once there, do not miss Fasilides Bath. It is separated from the castle and, although it once was the bath for King Fasilides, today it is used as a baptism during Timkat festival.
The little lakeshore town of Gorgora (ጎርጎራ), 60km southwest of Gonder, has a slow, tropical vibe. It provides the chance to see rarely visited monasteries and makes a good excursion for birders. Mostly it offers an easy, comfortable escape from well-trodden tourist trails. If you've already visited the monasteries from Lake Tana's southern shore, these will struggle to impress – come instead for the quiet natural beauty of the place.
Getting to Gorgora from Gondar
1. By Car
The easiest way to get to Gorgora is by car from Gondar. Expect to pay around $US100 per person for a day trip with a guide or $US60 for a taxi one-way. The journey should take a little over an hour on the newly-completed E33 highway.
2. Bus
The local bus leaving from Gondar is by far the cheapest option and is, at the very least, a real African experience. From 5am onwards the bus gradually fills with people and departs once the driver considers it full.

The Simien Mountains (also spelled Semien Mountains) are located in the Ethiopian Highlands, often referred to as “the Roof of Africa”. The highest point in the country is the mountain Ras Dashen at 4,550 m, found within the park. Simien Mountains National Park is located close to the town of Debark, where the park headquarters and main entry point can be found. Debark is on the main road between the historic cities of Gondar and Axum, within a few hours’ drive of each. There are also buses that run between these two cities that stop at Debark.
Rare Flora and Fauna of the Simien Mountains
Simien Mountain National Park is home to a number of rare plants and animals, some of which are endemic to the region (i.e. they cannot be found anywhere else). Lucky travelers can spot the following:
• Walia ibex — this endangered species, related to the goat, can only be found in the mountains of northern Ethiopia. They are known for their large horns.
• Gelada monkey — also known as the “bleeding heart monkey” for the bright pink patch of skin on its chest. These baboon-like monkeys are only found in the Ethiopian Highlands, where they can be found in large groups.
• Ethiopian wolf/Simien fox — endemic to Ethiopia, this creature is technically neither a wolf nor a fox (although it resembles both), but is closely related to dogs and wolves. Its red fur is beautiful; however, there are very few left in the wild. Travelers may get lucky and spot one while exploring the plateaus of the Simien Mountains.
• Giant lobelia (Lobelia rhynchopetalum) — a plant that only grows in Ethiopia. With their large leaves spiking out like a bizarre palm tree, they seem like a relic from prehistoric times.
Getting in to semain Mountains
The best way to get to the Simien Mountains National Park is via a domestic flight into the nearby town of Gondar, followed by a 2-hour drive into the park through scenic highland landscapes. Most visitors will spend a night or two in Gondar to explore the town before heading into the Simiens.
If travelling from Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines offer direct flights which take less than an hour. Note that if you have an international flight with Ethiopian Airlines (either in to, or out of, Addis Ababa) you will qualify for a significant discount (~60%) on all domestic flights you take in the country. The Gondar airport is around 20km from the centre of the town.
Direct flights are available from the city of Axum too, if travelling from there.
If coming from Bahir Dar, you can reach Gondar via a ~3 hour drive across scenic landscapes.
